Locked down, locked in, what you watching? (boxing)

--- 84 hrs a week must make you wealthy beyond measure if not a bit haggard.

Watched Leon vs Carlos de Leon who was dwarfed and outmuscled by Leon looking like I'd never seen him before as a Hercules.

Alas, Carlos hung tough to knock poor Leon out.

Then I watched John Carlo making his debut knock out the obviously dissipated Leon in the 1st rd.

Leon still hanging tough after some serious health concerns, so God Bless.

--- Big Buster Mathis vs Joe Frazier at MSG for the stripped Ali belt.

Both undefeated with Mathis on a 10 fight KO streak he did his best to extend. Moves like young Clay to pick harder shots in between tying up Joe whose dwarfed but smoking as usual. Half the shots are sonic sickness in a broadcast much superior to today's pablum.

Dunphy let's the fight tell the story with minimal context. Very subtle LHook finishes Mathis in the 11th, his first career KD.

This the Buster being trained for an Ali challenge in 68 that was defunct after his 67 strippage.

great fight!

--- Settled in to score the Witherspoon vs Holmes controversy and NYET!!!

Pulled the plug as boxing clearly not serious in staging a legit fight. Lar 42-0, 30 KOs vs baby Spoon 15-0, 11 KOs with both in black trimmed white shorts, same shoes, skin tone, hair, and height guarantees controversy.

NYET!!!

So I watched Mathis-frazier. as planned. Indeed a great fight for maybe 6 rounds, until the big man started slowing down.

Man, Mathis really looked good in those days. Maybe not elite, but he moved incredibly well for his size.

In any other era, he might have done very well.

I watched Eric Lucas vs Glen Catley II. What a way to win a world title (ok it was a vacant title, but still), after losing your previous 2 chances against Tiozzo and Roy Jones. And it dramatically knock out Catley, after losing to him by stoppage in their first fight. good stuff.

--- The Fight of the Century 49 years ago, Ali vs Frazier.

Too busy building up my GPA in school and no access to closed circuit, so being a big Ali fan, like all I refused to believe the results.

Shocked to my core when I finally did, and that was an alltime beating that Frazier doesn't recieve enough credit for. He exposed how weak Ali title comp had been.

An absolute barnburner where we have to give credit to Ali for not caving while being forced into such a firefight such as the world had never seen before.

So whats the backstory on what was going on with Eamonn Loughran when he go blasted out of there in the 1st round against Jose Luis Lopez to lose his WBO title? Then he retires.

There's no real back story. I think he'd fallen out of love with boxing before the fight and definitely had afterwards. He was wise with his money unlike so many and has been comfortable in retirement. To be honest he was never on Lopez's level as was shown when he got exposed by Tony Ekubia.

Was recently rewatching Abel Ramos' come from behind last round stoppage over Perrella. Interesting to hear that Abel was sick, coughing for 2 weeks prior to the fight. I wonder if maybe he was sick with COVID-19. It was hilarious hearing Brian Kenny, Lennox and Goosen fawning over Perrella in the last round, and BOOM shit ends just like that lol.

Good one. I watched that tonight.

I love it when a little guy goes up against a tall guy. I always say, when a short & tall fighter meet, except for arm length & the ability for a tall fighter to just pull his head back for safety, the shorter fighter has all the other advantages. For instance, it's hard for the tall guy to see punches coming on the inside.

DAT UPPERCUT ! whew.

- Thx.

I just re-watched all three Antonio Tarver - RJJ fights.

The second two are sorta' hard to watch, if you were a fan of the once super-human Jones, but that first fight, despite him being on the decline, was really exciting.

Tarver was so explosive when he attacked, and Roy had to really dig deep.

I dunno what the crowd was booing about at the end, the winner was pretty clear, IMO.

I suggest you check out Tarver on the Al Bernstein podcast unplugged. Great interview.

RE having no fans:

All sports should do the following:

Set up hundreds of rooms throughout the country, where (in each one) small groups of people, recently tested for covid (or those who had it and recovered) get together to watch the event on a big screen TV, but wearing headphones. (No broadcast sound in the room.)

Put some mics in each room, and record broadcast all of the groups' reactions, combined. It would be easy to digitally enhanced that final audio track to sound like it was in a large stadium.

Ta da.

I agree, it was a competitive fight but Jones won clearly. Maybe the crowd were just used to seeing him utterly dominate the opposition and were disappointed that they didn't get that.
